Mission

Built in 1911 by St. Alphonsus Church, The Athenaeum was conceived as "a neighborhood playhouse" serving the needs of the Lakeview community and as an opera house for the largely German parish.

History

The building also contains a gymnasium, food pantry and meeting rooms as well as a full-service concession area, two 80-seat studio theatres, and a 50-seat studio theatre. Operating continuously since 1911, the Athenaeum mainstage is actually two theatres in one--an intimate playhouse with 454 main floor seats for smaller needs, and, with the addition of its generous balcony, a 984 seat theatre for larger productions. The Athenaeum mainstage Theatre and the studios are available for rental. The managing and presenting entity of the theatre is SCT Productions, also located at this address. SCT Productions is an Illinois not-for-profit and 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation and a member of the League of Chicago Theatres, the Chicago Dance Coalition, the Chicago Music Alliance, the South Lakeview Neighbors, and the League of HIstoric American Theatres. Athenaeum Theatre Staff: Fred Solari: General Manager; Clyde P. Foster: Theatre Manager; Rich Leff: Box Office Manager/Public Relations Director; Peter Solari: Concessions Manager; John L. Schmitz: Development Consultant; Melaney Reed/Michele Govea: Head Ushers; Carol Fox & Associates: Marketing; Paczolt Insurance Agency: Insurance; Bob Bagnuolo & Dennis Fiore: Flymen.
